South Devon gardeners are lucky to enjoy much milder winters than gardeners in more rugged parts of Britain. In comparison with various different low lying  areas inland of southern England, South Devon enjoys much warmer softer winters, but this means we can garden differently (and sometimes for longer!) than the rest of the UK. We have less frost, very little ice and snow and our lovely summers are also cooler because the sea is never far away on the breeze. Usually  in the UK, January is our coldest harshest month. However as sea temperatures usually reach their minimum at the end of February, that is is usually the coldest month for us.  Midland counties on the other hand experience the frosty air as early as September. In South Devon gardeners can hang on to a few late blooms  until late November or even the first week of December.
